Newport News Shipbuilding & the Los Angeles Class

Newport News Shipbuilding is the lead yard in the Navy's new Los Angeles Class nuclear-powered attack submarine, of which SSN 688 is the lead ship.     The keel of the Los Angeles was laid on January 8, 1972. The ship was launched on April 6, 1974 and delivered by Newport News Shipbuilding on September 14, 1976.    Newport News Shipbuilding is the world's largest shipyard, and the only shipyard capable of building and servicing the full range of nuclear and conventionally powered ships for both the Navy and commercial customers.
