Change of home port - 1978

In 1978 the USS LOS ANGELES was transfered from Newport News, Virginia to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. During this cruise the LA stopped in South Carolina at Charleston for some repairs and cruised through the Panama Canal on our way to stops in California. Dignitaries from the State of California, Los Angeles County, and the City of Los Angeles joined the ship in San Diego and were shuttled to Los Angeles , the ships namesake city. In Los Angeles the officers and men were greeted by a host of celebrities and local officials and the mayor of Los Angeles declared the day "USS LOS ANGELES DAY". As honored guests the crew were: given the key to the city, guests on the Tonight Show, guests at Universal Pictures, and treated to a Los Angeles Angels baseball game. In return, we gave tours to over two thousand visitors.

Debra Jensen, Playboy Playmate, visited the boat while we were in Long Island. She left behind this autographed photograph for "....the foxy guys on the Los Angeles...."
