| | | | | | Western Pacific - Indian Ocean Deployment - 1979: Port of call: Diego Garcia - Topside Liberty | | | |
Anchored in Diego Garcia harbor
. Off watch, on duty crew get a little topside liberty while off duty "liberty hounds" wait for the liberty boat. Pictured: Miceal Drohan, Terry Cole, Norm Verbanic. Some of the crew caught some pretty large fish here. The Messmen cleaned and cooked them for the lucky fishermen. During underwater inspections ship's divers spotted quite a few species of shark. Some were pretty immense. Many times the fishermen lost their bait, hook, sinkers,
bobbers, and line to these denizens of the deep. Here's a quote about it from the Chief Radioman about the situation: " I remember one night in Diego Garcia when topside was covered with dead fish parts and the CO or XO, I can't remember which one, had a heart attach when they saw that mess. My thought was submarge the ship and all of that crap will float away. - Larry Miltenberger RMCM(SS) Ret."
