Western Pacific - Indian Ocean Deployment - 1980:
Underway: Shellback Initiation

The Shellback initiation is a long standing Naval tradition. It celebrates the passage of the ship and crew across the Earth's equator. Those who have not crossed the Equator are known as Pollywogs. Those who have passed into the Realm of King Neptune and been accepted, are known as Shellbacks.

Pollywogs

After crews berthing, a Pollywog den, was captured early by the forces of King Neptune. Some signs of resistance remain.

Fugitive Pollywog apprehended - Mike Leary

Resistance was futile. Eventually all errant 'wogs were rounded up....all except the amazing Steve Elliot, that is.

Shellbacks host a tasty meal for the Pollywogs.

"Grrr, that's good stuff"! A hungry Pollywog digs into his tasty 'wog stew.
