Western Pacific - Indian Ocean Deployment - 1981: Port of call: Subic Bay, Philippine Islands - Olongapo River | | | | | | | Photograph by author. | | | | | | | The Olongapo River was the boundry between Subic Bay Naval Base and Olongapo City, PI. The families and business along the river used it as a source of drinking, bathing, and sewage. Children in bonka boats would gather at the bridge and dive into the water for coins. Occassionally Navy Divers would have to enter the water to recover a drunken sailor or worse. Anyone falling into the river had to undergo a battery of shots to prevent disease. | |
